The History Of Stress.

Being a psychological modern disease, stress is recognised widely among doctors and psychiatrists as a danger to the human mind. However, the history of stress still plays only a minor role in humankind’s knowledge due to the complexity of its roots.

It was not until the 1920s that the term stress was brought to the society. According to Wikipedia, the word stress was derived from the other form of a Middle English word destresse, which rooted via Old French on the Latin word stringere. The word was used among scientists of physics to “refer to the internal distribution of a force exerted on a material body, resulting in strain”. (Wikipedia). Later on, during the 1920s and 1930s, the term began to spread and gain population, as more and more people suffer from it. However it stayed at the extent of biological and psychological fields only, to illustrate the illness caused by constant mental strain.

Walter Cannon was the first to use stress to refer to external factors that disrupted homeotasis. Homeotasis is the main concept of stress, in which most features can be seen from stress appear in homeotasis. According to Cannon, “environmental factors, internal or external stimuli, continually disrupt homeotasis. Factors causing an organism’s condition to diverge too far from homeotasis can be interpreted as stress”.

More and more researches had been drawn to stress since the widespread of it was growing and growing non-stop. The pace of life became faster, the modernisation kept on going and going. And from the late 1960s, academic psychologists began to recognise and adopt the term stress into serious concept. By the time of the late 1970s, stress had already became “the medical area of greatest concern to the general population” (Wikipedia). Much concern was brought up about stress, and people began to be aware of such symptoms. More basic research was called for to address the matter, as to understand thoroughly the condition and how it could affect the balanced health of people.

By the 1990s, stress had become an integral part of modern scientific understanding in terms of physiology and human functioning, not only in Western countries but also in other regions as well. The consequences of stress is now recognised, which include threat to life, serious physical diseases, or psychological integrity. Emotional trauma is one of the most common consequences derived from stress.

The Psychological Aspect Of Stress: Negative Impact.

Perhaps most of humankind now take stress in a less serious way than before because the fact is that stress have been developing over the years, spreading all over the world and become such a common term that is recognised everywhere. It is due to the obvious negative impacts stress have brought to humankind, especially to the psychological extent.

It can never be denied that stress indicates a strain in human’s mind, regardless of the fact that it may also bring benefits, not only harms. The word stress itself carry a negative meaning about the constant pressure one have to put up with. To an extent, stress can be manageable, but most of the time people do not notice that they are suffering from stress until the condition went out of control.

The most visible negative effect of stress is the brain exhaustion, in other words, fatigue and the loss of concentration. Normally a person’s brain can work effectively 15-16 hours a day, during which the actual working hours take about 6-7 hours in general. However, if you are under stress, the amount of time you work decreases to only approximately 4 hours a day, one sixth of the whole day’s hours. This is due to the negative thinking that stress brought about, and losing concentration because of such thoughts is simply explainable. People who suffer from stress have the tendency to be sleep-deprived ones, and fatigue is believed to arrive earlier in a day than those who have normal state of mind.

Along with loss of concentration, sleeping disorders are common among stressed people. Eight out of ten people diagnosed with stress admit that they have troubles trying to sleep at night. Insomnia is the most common sleeping disorder, but there are also others which are equally serious such as oversleeping, sleep deprived, sleepwalking, or unusual activities while sleeping. These rooted from the factor that stress is directly related to the brain functions, and one of them is to sleep. If not solved immediately, these disorders may cause the stressed person very costly consequences.

Not only concentration and sleeping disorders are considered, but also the behaviours of stressed people are taken into account. Basic impacts of stress on the psychological system include anxiety, ill-tempered manner, extreme anger, fear, depression, aggressive attitude, indifferent thinking, forgetfulness, self-isolation and so forth. Of all these symptoms, depression and aggression are the two most typical features of an overly-stressed person. This side of impact from stress is the most serious one which can cause permanent damage to one’s consciousness. Therefore, this should be concerned in a more efficient way, otherwise the consequence will be out of control.

In conclusion, negative effects that stress brings on the psychological system of human beings is simply undeniable and cannot be ignored. It is only the question of how to fight with this disease and prevent the society from becoming an aggressive, or emotionless one.

Having experienced such pressure before during stressful times, a person would have the tendency to solve things more quickly than others because of the experience they gain from stress.

Another positive psychological effect of stress not many people acknowledge is that it boosts the speed of thinking in human’s brains, challenges our own mind power and creates regular practicing of fluctuate thinking. Most of us do not want to admit these positive aspects, but scientists have proven that a manageable amount of stress can help a brain work more effectively through practice. As we all know, nowadays stress has been a very common disease, not only among the white-collar community but also spreading throughout the society. Along with some benefits, most of the time stress leaves a negative mark on our lifestyle that cannot be easily removed. One of the impacts of stress on ourselves that we should acknowledge is the negative physical impact.

Firstly, the negative effect of stress towards physical ability of human is demonstrated in the loss of power in certain types of muscles and other internal organs of the body. It is proven by experts and doctors that an overdose of stress could lead to serious damage to the function of organs, especially those that concern with psychological system. A great number of people suffer from stress also got other side effects and diseases such as kidney malfunction, kidney stone, intestine problems, memory loss, parkinson and other serious diseases.

Secondly, it can be seen clearly that stress also affects badly on the amount of work that we could manage during a certain time. While without stress you can work for more hours in a day, and the work you have done proved to be more efficient; the effectiveness of work you do during stress is much less and of course, also less in the amount of time. That is because to most people, stress prevent them from carrying out physical tasks in the usual way. For example, a person would do much better in a relaxed state of mind rather than a stressful one.

To sum up, in general, stress tends to give humankind harmful effects on the physical strength than a positive one. However, if we know how to take advantage of stress, we can still exploit our own ability in different situations including stress itself.

The Physical Aspect Of Stress: Positive Impact.

Brought about by many experts and psychiatrists, stress is now believed widely among us that it is a harmful and destructive disease which can be caused to a human’s brain. However, some of today’s proven factors demonstrate the opposite, in which stress can be a benefit to a certain extent or amount.

Stress is a term that refers to the mental state where the pressure have strong impact on the human bodies. During this state, the body produces a kind of element in the brain that helps to cope with challenges, anxiety, anger, fear, or any other kind of extreme emotions. While most people believe this progress of producing the element is harmful and unhealthy to the human’s lifestyle, there are significant evidences showing that if one can manage the pattern of coping with a considerable amount of stress, the person would have some advantages in real life, both in physical and mental field.
First of all, the advantage that can be derived from stress is the enhancement of functions in the way the body works. An acceptable amount of stress can help your physical ability be stronger. For example, most athletes when questioned came up with the answer that they tend to do better under a certain kind of pressure during competitions. That is because of the special element that is produced in the situation when one have to put up with stress. However, only a manageable amount of stress would help strengthen the muscles and lighten up the activities of internal organs. Any form of stress that passed the limit would be harmful for the body.

Therefore, it can have a positive effect on the human body’s resistancy and immune system.
o
In conclusion, an acceptable amount of stress may bring you a lot more benefits than anybody can think of. Unlike the other statements saying that stress only provides us with harm, there is a fact that we should consider which is stress can be really helpful if we know how to take advantage of it.

This reason tends to be the hardest to identify and solve, because it cannot be balanced artificially.

Secondly, it is believed that the tension from social connections and family usually causes you the most stressful situations. This many sound nonsense at the first impression, but most experts have pointed out the environments that cause you highest stress usually are the ones you are closest to. Which means, only a small action can have a negative impact on your mental power. Stress may derive from the deadline of your work, the financial problems you have to deal with, the overload of work amount, the tremendous change of workplace, the over-concentration on a matter, the loss of your relatives, love-related problems, conflicts with family members…these can all be the major reason of your increasing stress in daily life.

Thirdly, physical problems can also be the potential harm to people’s mental ability. People with diseases and/or unhealthy lifestyle are more easy to be exposed to stress than people who exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. Imagine suffering from a serious illness. Who can remain unstressful under such conditions? So it is highly believed that health problems can be a very serious cause of your stress.

Last but not least, it is our own thoughts that have major impact on the sustainablity of ourselves. One may not know how their thoughts can be harmful this way, but it is indeed proved that overthinking, especially negative ones, may just put more unnecessary stress on our mind. Picturing bad situations and negative future in your head does not help to solve neither your conscience nor your strength. The key to avoid stress is to live positively without any overthinking.
